While Survivor still remains a popular and highly rated show, ratings have slowly declined in recent seasons. One of the most common criticisms was a lack of racial diversity among the participants. To address these concerns Season 13 will feature 5 African Americans, 5 Asian Americans, 5 Hispanic Americans, and 5 Caucasian Americans. The 20 castaways will be divided along racial lines into 4 teams. Many claim this was a strategic move to increase controversy and drive up ratings.

Season 13 known as Survivor Cook Islands will be set in the Aitutaki Islands an atoll located in the South Pacific near Tahiti. The concept of Exile Island will be returning.
