New Wave of Business Opportunities Spark Controversy on the Net
Business opportunities or scams?
(PRWEB) March 1, 2006 — New business opportunities promising loads of cash in exchange for a minimum of effort are popping up all over the Internet.
But are they legal? Are they ethical?
The marketing package is fantastic
I can’t vouch for anyone else, but I know that my son and I have both struck it rich with this program. That’s why our testimonials are included on the site. These nay-sayers are just trying to persuade marketers to play with them instead of us. That’s what I think.
Kristi Sayles, a Tennessee teacher, says that she believes highly in one such program she just recently joined, because has she earned more in a few days than what she usually brings home on her teacher's check for a whole month. "The marketing package is fantastic," she says.
Ms. Sayles isn't the only one making such claims about such programs that usually involve convincing others to do the same.
But, there has been controversy over this new wave of home business opportunities.
Some people have called them scams, stating that the programs make false claims of wealth-building and should be avoided.
One well-known marketer sent a message out to his list warning his members against joining the very program that Ms. Sayles is involved in.
Mrs. Sayles dismisses the alerts. “I can’t vouch for anyone else, but I know that my son and I have both struck it rich with this program. That’s why our testimonials are included on the site. These nay-sayers are just trying to persuade marketers to play with them instead of us. That’s what I think.”

The Catholic Letter now Offers Online Interaction
The Catholic Letter (a newsletter explaining the Catholic Faith geared towards the common man) now offers online interactivity. New features include the ability of registered users to add comments to articles and take part in forum discussions.
(PRWEB) March 12, 2006 — The Catholic Letter ( http://thecatholicletter.com ) recently switched to a Drupal based content management system. The new features include the audience’s ability to add comments to published articles. The comments will be generally uncensored, and differing opinions are welcomed.
Eric Engel, professional freelance writer and chief editor of The Catholic Letter, says he anticipates “controversial discussion and heated debates.” While he admittedly realizes this will drive portions of his audience away, he hopes it will open the dialog between Catholics, non-catholic Christians, and atheists and agnostics. “The Catholic Letter, from its beginning, is focused on the common man. Part of this includes the voice of reason, and his ability to ask and answer questions.”
While many Catholic Publications allow for user comments, most filter out the more controversial ones. They often have strange restrictions regarding registration, use of real names, and other points that are almost foreign to conventional online interaction tools.
The Catholic Letter, started in 2005, was an offshoot of Copy For Sale ( http://copyforsale.com ), a copywriting company in Cleves, Ohio. The owner had decided to start a free newsletter explaining the Catholic Faith in common terms. Since then, the distribution grew, and repeated requests prompted them to allow the audience to comment on articles and post their own questions in an attached forum.
Eric Engel says that only offensive language and spam will be censored…all other comments are welcome.

Controversy Contines Over Safety of Mifeprex, Abortion Pill
After several deaths allegedly linked to Mifeprex, federal regulators are still investigating the safety of the RU-486 abortion pill
New York, NY (PRWEB) April 26, 2006 — Since Mifeprex’s approval in 2000, the drug has been linked to several deaths of women who died of Sepsis or severe bacterial infection. Despite these risks, the drug continues to be offered nationwide by doctors as an alternative to surgical abortions.
Mifeprex (mifepristone), “the abortion pill”, with a 92% success rate, can induce abortions up to seven weeks after fertilization. To date, there have been 637 reported cases of adverse side effects associated with Mifeprex. Many of these cases involved side effects such as hemorrhage, infection, and deadly sepsis or septic shock. There have been five reported deaths from septic shock after taking Mifeprex. All the deaths have been associated with a rare bacterial infection called Clostridium sordellii.
Federal regulators are currently investigating these deaths and the risks of Mifeprex, but the abortion drug is not the only related controversy in the news. The Pro-Life and Pro-Choice debate continues as South Dakota recently banned all forms of abortion while Massachusetts and Illinois ruled to make Plan-B emergency contraceptives available at all pharmacies.

(PRWEB) May 15, 2006 — A mother of two and founder of two Lyme web sites and a support group, released her new book, "The Singing Forest, A Journey Through Lyme Disease" today.
"The Singing Forest, A Journey Through Lyme Disease" by author (and 14-year long Lyme sufferer) PJ Langhoff is a controversial, true story of one family's struggles to overcome discrimination and undiagnosed and untreated Lyme disease. Many people are unaware that Lyme disease is the fastest growing disease in the United States. This book tells the remarkable, but true story of Lyme's far-reaching effects on one Midwestern family.
When PJ Langhoff moved to Wisconsin seeking a different way of life, she had no idea how quickly that wish would be granted. Her family's footsteps into the realm of Lyme disease would encompass more than a decade and a half, and touch the lives of people everywhere.
Divorce, disability, discrimination in the courts, schools, Seppuku, Columbine, the Federal Government, Lyme Disease, and false allegations of child abuse and mental illness all weave a remarkably complex tapestry of circumstances that will leave you wondering what happens next.

The website for Risk Premium, a contemporary thriller, is officially open. This exciting new novel, which will be published in June, has a plot which is sure to be a controversial talking-point. The first chapter has been posted on the site in its entirity.
Verona, NJ (PRWEB) May 5, 2006 — Neil Ralley today announced the opening of a website for Risk Premium, a contemporary thriller which will be published in June. The url is http://www.RiskPremium.net
The book promises a plot which has been described by the few who know the details as highly controversial and provocative.
Ralley explained "Although this is a work of fiction there are events and situations described in the book that have similarities with current events and which are likely to capture readers' imaginations and become subject to debate."
Visitors to the website will be able to read the whole of Chapter 1 but Ralley is confident that no-one will be able to guess the plot of the book from the contents of the first chapter. "It's been carefully edited to ensure that the game is not given away. What I have tried to do is to draw people into the book and make them want to see the rest of the story unfold. Also this is my first novel and I wanted to give readers the opportunity to experience my writing before deciding to buy it.
Ralley is best known for http://stainedglassphotography.com an award-winning website incorporating photographs of stained glass windows. However he is under no illusion that
Risk Premium is likely to appeal to a very different audience: "There is violence and sexual content in the novel which simply will not appeal to the average visitor to Stained Glass Photography."

The 20 castaways will be divided along racial lines into 4 teams. Many claim this was a strategic move to increase controversy and drive up ratings.

Publisher Expresses Confidence Despite Controversy
The authenticity of a memoir about a childhood of sexual abuse and survival at an infamous Magdalen laundry has been challenged in the English and Irish media. Greystone Books, the North American publisher of the book, Kathy's Story, issues a statement.
Vancouver, Canada (PRWEB) September 23, 2006 — Greystone Books is the North American publisher of Kathy's Story: The True Story of a Childhood Hell inside Ireland's Magdalen Laundries, by Kathy O'Beirne (Greystone, ISBN 1-55365-168-5, $24.95 CDN/ $16.95 USD, trade paperback). This memoir was originally published by Mainstream Publishing in the United Kingdom and has been released this year as Don't Ever Tell. As a result of a family dispute, controversial remarks are currently being published in the English and Irish media questioning the book's authenticity. Greystone Publisher Rob Sanders states, “We have confidence in the work done by Mainstream to ensure the appropriateness of the book for publication.”
The Magdalen laundries were thrust into public consciousness with Peter Mullan's 2002 film, The Magdalene Sisters. Girls considered promiscuous or “at risk” were incarcerated in these notorious workhouses, which operated in Ireland throughout the twentieth century. Kathy O'Beirne was one of these girls.
As Kathy O'Beirne recounts her horrific story in unflinching detail, the strength of her character shines through. It's this strength that has enabled her to survive, led her to champion a campaign to help other victims of institutional abuse, and driven her continuing struggle for justice.
